1812年，拿破侖的軍隊控制大部分的歐洲國家。在為數(shù)不多未被征服的國家中，俄國打算聯(lián)合奧地利一起進行殊死抵抗。貴族安德烈公爵（梅爾·弗爾 Mel Ferrer 飾）就是這樣懷揣一腔抱負的俄國軍官。然而安德烈的摯友皮埃爾公爵（亨利·方達 Henry Fonda 飾）卻毫不關(guān)心戰(zhàn)事。他在父親臨終前成為遺產(chǎn)繼承人，與貴族之女海倫（安妮塔·艾克伯格 Anita Ekberg 飾）結(jié)婚，卻在婚后不久發(fā)現(xiàn)性格不合而分居。安德烈戰(zhàn)役失敗被釋放歸家看望難產(chǎn)而死的妻子。幾個月后，彼埃爾與羅斯托夫伯爵一家在去打獵，叫上了安德烈。安德烈對伯爵的女兒娜塔莎（奧黛麗·赫本 Audrey Hepburn 飾）一見鐘情。不久，娜塔莎接受了安德烈的求婚，然而安德烈很快重返軍隊。海倫的弟弟阿納托里趁虛而入，騙得娜塔莎的愛，唆使娜塔莎與他私奔。俄法戰(zhàn)爭開始，娜塔莎遇到了深受重傷的安德烈，安德烈在臨死前原諒了娜塔莎的背叛。戰(zhàn)爭結(jié)束后，皮埃爾回到了莫斯科，與娜塔莎結(jié)合在了一起。
